If any man could be called a knight in shining armor, it would be Godfrey. This scion of two noble families knew from a young age that his purpose in life was to serve as a Knight of the Realm, and to this very day he devotes himself to sacrifice and service as a proud member of the Poor Brethren, a knightly order renowned for their nigh-fanatical dedication to the chivalric ideal. His one vice? An...intense fixation on a certain legendary creature: the unicorn.

Biography

He was born the son of nobility, a product of a seemingly-harmonious arranged marriage between a sprightly heiress with a good head for business and an ailing nobleman who nevertheless did his best to uphold his knightly family's honor. Young Godfrey was given an extensive education, raised up on piety and fine arts as well as the playful sparring he engaged in with his siblings across the manor's spacious grounds. Once he'd discovered his knightly ambitions, he was supported by his parents along the typical path of page to squire, and then, ultimately, to the happy day of his dubbing ceremony. After receiving the customary kiss on the cheek from the knight who gave him his spurs, he happened to have a feeling of butterflies in his chest. It was then that he realized that he was most attracted to men. This fact brought him no shame. However, it haunted him then, as it haunts him to this day, that he could possess romantic feelings at all. If it weren't for a fateful sight that he'd seen in his otherwise idyllic younger days, perhaps he wouldn't have to carry such conflict so close to his heart.

Only a child when he glimpsed his mother kissing the steward of his family's beloved apple orchard, Godfrey's naivete was abruptly shattered with the new knowledge of his mother's affair. What compounded his now-troubled heart was the later-discovered fact that his father knew, and didn't care in the slightest. His parents had a cordial, companionate relationship at best, though there was a cold distance that Godfrey could no longer ignore after seeing what he'd never been meant to. He began to doubt the sanctity and security of romantic love, and so it was without hesitation that he took upon himself a vow of chastity once he'd earned his spurs as a knight in his 18th year. The courtly romance tales he had been so enamored with seemed to lose their gilding in his eyes, and he came to decide that that aspect of knightly life would never be relevant in his chivalric career. It was his devotion to service and purity from carnal indulgence that led to his future induction into the Humble Order of the Poor Brethren, an honor he is proud to have attained. Due to the Order's strict standards, few knights are ever invited to join their ranks. In the wake of that grand achievement, Godfrey has continued to live a spartan life of knightly virtue, traveling across the land on his current proud steed, Justitia. As far as his own ambitions are concerned, he will continue to do so until the day he dies...preferably in the midst of heated battle for a righteous cause.

Despite his best intentions, a certain fact of life that others tend to take for granted has become a recurring problem for Godfrey's aspiration of lifelong chastity and selfless knightly servitude: namely, sexual fantasies. They've struck him during lonely nights in secluded inn rooms and in tents by dimming campfires, coming to mind when he least expects. While it would be obvious to anyone else that he yearns for intimacy and closeness after so many years alone, the old knight is in a state of denial about it. Deeply ashamed of his apparent weakness in staving off such lewd visions, he often employs the "cold bath" strategy of dealing with their aftermath.

And yet, if a certain mysterious presence in his life has anything to say about it, he may be privy to more than mere fantasies before too long a time has passed.

Appearance

Facial features: Though softened and weathered with age, his facial features are what one might expect of a knight: a stern, noble brow, an elegant nose, and a strong jaw. His watery blue eyes can be as stormy as the sea or as calm as a garden pond depending on his mood; they are usually gentle eyes, and have more than once quieted the cries of children initially intimidated by his armored form. But if you see his gaze alight with fury and his teeth set...well, you must be some kind of dishonorable knave, and you had better watch yourself, lest his shining sword pierce your wicked throat.

Hair: Despite its turning white as he grows ever older, it's still as full and voluminous as ever: yet another sign that the aging process has treated him strangely well. His hair still grows at a good enough rate that he frequently has to renew the ritual shaving of its middle portion; he wears it in the traditional knightly style of the Poor Brethren, though it's frequently covered up by his hood of mail.

Body: Spry and strong for an older man. His muscles are toned, his grip is powerful, and his gait is sure and steady. To this very day, he rides as high in the saddle as he did in his callow youth.

Fashion: More often than not, he can be seen in his knightly attire. When he does dress in more casual clothing, it's typically more modest and homespun than one might expect from a man raised among the nobility. But Godfrey has long put aside ostentation in favor of plainer dress and humility. His favored colors are white, red, blue, gray, and various earthen tones.

Accessories: During particularly dangerous and grueling battles, he is known to don a great helm. Its sides are decorated with a pair of wings. and a horn graces the center of its forehead in honor of the creatures Godfrey admires so. Aside from the great helm, his trusty blade travels with him wherever he goes. It's a well-tempered sword, and Godfrey has devoted much time to its maintenance. He's taken such good care of it that it appears far less old than it truly is, and the same goes for much of his other equipment. A secret, carefully concealed accessory is the chastity belt that he wears as part of his knightly obligation of "purity."

Personal Life:

Aches and Pains of Older Age
Although he possesses these, they are quite mild. He keeps quite active and still engages in the strenuous daily training that most knights usually cease to engage in long before reaching his age. However, this doesn't seem to be enough to account for his unusual vitality and vigor. One couldn't be blamed for thinking him enchanted, for it is very likely that he is.

A Unicorn's Blessing
Once, long ago, in the midst of his 20th summer, his life was saved by a unicorn. And it came to pass afterward that every time he was faced with certain doom, a chance miracle would occur that would grant him the upper hand once more. To this day, the memory of that first encounter is ever vivid in his mind. Every so often on his quests and journeys, he can feel a benevolent presence trailing him in the distance. It is this feeling that continues to fuel his fascination and reverence for the blessed, auspicious creatures that he has come to view as a symbol of all that is good and holy in the oft-troubled world in which he lives. His personal library in his rarely-visited home is full of parchments and books about unicorns, and each has been read and pored over numerous times by the old knight. He yearns to have an up-close encounter with one once again, even if only briefly, before the day he passes on.

Miscellania
  • Despite being from the higher rungs of his country's feudal society, Godfrey is no respecter of persons. The lowliest peasant farmer deserves the same courtesy and service as a queen upon her throne in his mind, and in both word and deed Godfrey is the very picture of knightly honor to everyone he comes across.
  • With his fine voice, he makes an excellent reciter of poetry and ballads, not to mention a singer. His tastes in song and literature tend towards the heroic and long-winded, though his various traveling companions throughout the years haven't complained. He's rather mesmerizing to listen to, though he credits this to good instruction in formal diction from his father and many hours of practice rather than inborn talent.
  • He's a bit of a moralizer and a scolder, and while this doesn't endear him to some, he honestly means well. His unceasing devotion to his knightly vow and the strict code that comes with it tends to blind him to how much more flexible the morals of common lay folk can be, as well as the gray areas in which they must operate. Nevertheless, he will never condemn someone who must steal to survive, for instance.
  • His existence is relatively spartan, and he prefers to "eat to live" as opposed to "living to eat." He subsists on hearty, yet simple fare, and prefers cold, clear water to warm mulled wine. However, he just might be able to be persuaded towards indulgence in rare cases...and by rarer people.
  • While deeply repressed, Godfrey is not a confrontational prude. In fact, he tends more towards avoidance and embarrassment than anything else. The slightest hint of bawdiness in bardic song or eroticism in embroidered tapestries is enough to make him blush and turn his head away. He's unusually bashful about sexuality for a man his age.
  • The antiquated pattern of speech he uses is scarcely heard in the lands he travels anymore, and at times it can grate on people's nerves when they have to parse it. Nevertheless, it's the only human dialect he knows and can speak fluently in, having been raised in a very formal and traditional household during a time when such a way of speaking was the linguistic law of the land.
  • After such extensive traveling across Uthaire and the neighboring countries on journeys both alone and accompanied, he has developed an excellent memory for the roads and landmarks of the various lands. There's no better person to keep a knightly expedition on track than Godfrey.
  • At his own insistence, he performs all the equipment maintenance and personal care that he can manage to on his own. He doesn't like to delegate more work to servants, servicepeople, or artisans than is absolutely necessary. It's part of his knightly code not to overburden others when he could do a task himself.

    Intimate Body Info:
  • 🍆 Size: ...Actually well-endowed. Very well-endowed. But he keeps it carefully concealed, telling no one. Hopefully none will ever glimpse it, or at least that's what he tells himself.
  • 🍑 Size: Noticeable, and nicely firm too. Doubtless the occasional vulgar peasant or crude, unmannerly knight has made secret comments about it. Yet Godfrey ignores such remarks as best as he can.
