Scabious Barebone is a young man living on his own in the farmhouse he was bequeathed by his deceased parents. Having no one else to help him, he tends to the Barebone apple orchard alone, subsisting on its bounty and whatever he can grow in his gardens. While his is a meager existence, he's nonetheless happy with his lot in life. Still, he misses his mother and father dearly, and the loneliness he feels since their untimely deaths tends to consume him. In his heart of hearts, he knows it was solitude that drove him to accept an unusual bargain proposed by a certain prominent man. It wasn't merely the promise of regular payments of gold that appealed, after all.
The supplement to his modest farming income was a godsend, but he truly craved meaningful company.

And yet after accepting this "gentleman caller" into his life, Scabious has found that his loneliness is deepening. Even so, he finds comfort in the regular visits of a mysterious healer woman from the nearby forest. She provides him with much-needed herbal remedies free of charge, as well as a listening ear for all his troubles.

He wishes she wouldn't ask about his bruises so often, though.

Biography

From the very start of his humble life, Scabious tended to fare poorly when it came to his health. His late parents always suspected that their own relatively advanced ages may have played a role in this, and carried a goodly measure of guilt over it. Having seen off their other children as they left to seek their fortune beyond agriculture, they hadn't expected to welcome another son into the world. And yet along came Scabious, an unexpected yet cherished blessing. He proved to be both cheerful and duty-driven, devoted to the family farm and the values his parents raised him with. Since he wasn't qualified to attend the village schooling-house (due to the distance the family farm was from there), his parents also took charge of his education, instilling in him the skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic. He particularly took to mathematics, and soon enough he was assisting them with counting the take from their market days. Though his childhood and teenage years were filled with more toil than carefree play, he was nonetheless happy. His parents loved and provided for him, and that was enough.

But all good things must sadly come to an end.

The harshest winter he had ever known brought plague with its frost. All three of the Barebones in the little farmhouse contracted the illness, and while his parents initially survived their bout, the sickness sapped their vitality. He kept them alive with his tender care for as long as he could, fearful of what would become of him if they were to perish. But as the days dragged by, it became clear that neither of them would be able to hold on. Granting their son final blessings and giving him full possession of their farm, they passed on from the world during a peaceful snowfall...one following after the other.

Scabious howled his grief into the night, heard by none but the animals and the heedless stars above. In the months that followed, he made the best of things. He had long before come of age, after all, and in the flower of his young manhood he would have been expected to make his own way soon enough. Farmwork was as natural as breathing, and managing the business of produce-selling came easily too. Yet there were moments when finances became a concern, particularly when he had to visit the village doctor for unexpected injuries and illnesses too severe for him to nurse on his own. There at last came an autumn when he was wildly desperate for coin, having had a poor harvest and being unable to afford the goods that would sustain him through the coming winter.

And it was during that same autumn that his "gentleman caller" first came by to propose their arrangement...

Appearance

Facial features:
Delicate, round, and soft, Scabious's face reflects what one might expect of a kind-hearted, wholesome farm lad. His eyelashes are long, and his cheeks tend to be rosy. However, his skin is marred by spottiness and the occasional pockmark, and his paleness speaks to his relatively poor health.
Hair:
His coiffure is rather conformist, being much the same haircut as the one worn by all the young men in the nearby village. Such is in keeping with what's expected of the more devout residents of Consummatis Colony. Unlike those other young men, however, Scabious usually maintains his own hairstyle without assistance from the village barber.
Body:
While he's lived a reasonably prosperous life on the farm, Scabious tends to be a little on the malnourished side. He's quite thin for his height and build, prompting concern from the more observant marketplace customers whenever he drives his applecart into town.
Fashion:
He wears the standard modest outfit of Consummatis Colony residents. All his clothes are homespun, and were crafted by either himself or his parents.
Accessories:
Scabious abhors ostentatiousness, and prefers only modest adornment. Nevertheless, he has a soft spot for ribbons, pretty buttons, and lace. He also takes great care to keep the metal buckles on his clothing shiny, if only because his parents insisted on proper clothing maintenance.

Personal Life:

A Quiet Faithfulness
Scabious belongs to the same sect of the Faith of the Highest that most denizens of the separatist Consummatis Colony are part of; however, he is far less vocal about his religion than the average devotee. While he attends village worship services when he can, admittedly he finds as much meditative fulfillment in the rhythms of the natural world and his agricultural labors. Still, he does a great deal of spiritual reading in private, and tends to sing hymns to himself whenever he's alone.

Fear of Witches
While neither of his parents believed in such things, Scabious heard plenty of witchery tales from the superstitious local children during market days. Those stories haunted him, and brought about more than a few restless nightmares. Even to this day, on cold moonlit nights, Scabious sometimes finds himself gazing towards the nearby woodlands and wondering whether some frightful witch might be watching his farmhouse from their depths. He's brought up the concern to his healer friend who hails from the same woodland, worried that a witch might cause her some trouble too. And yet she always laughs the idea off, much to his exasperation.

Miscellania
  • Like his devout parents, Scabious observes the Vow of Plainspeeche. Roughly speaking, it's similar to Ye Olde English, or stereotypical Puritan dialogue (e.g. "Thou art a heretic!"), though perhaps not as restrictive.
  • He isn't proud of the fact that he's a kept man. He can't help but feel like it would disappoint his parents somehow.
  • Despite being subjected to all manner of debauchery by his "gentleman caller," he's not quite a kinkster. Were he to be in a true romantic relationship, he would much rather cuddle and caress his partner than anything else.
  • Though he's careful with money and can drive a hard bargain at the marketplace, he gives bags of apples to the neediest family in the village even when he can't quite afford to. Having seen them nearly starving numerous times, he wants to make sure they have something to eat whenever he can help it.
  • With his soft voice and effeminate looks, he's sometimes been mistaken for a young woman. He doesn't mind all that much, though.
  • He comes from a family lineage of relatively short people, so he's never had hang-ups about his stature. As far as he's concerned, he comes by it honestly.
  • While he knows he has siblings, he tends to assume that they may all be dead, or at least they have no interest in seeing how the family farm is coming along. None have ever returned for a visit.
  • Another sibling-related note: he's actually never met any of them.
  • He vows time and time again that he's going to calculate his exact age one day using the entries in his parents' old farm ledger/diary...yet somehow he never gets around to doing it.
