Elyssio is a young unicorn who hails from the same land as Sir Godfrey Folembray. He's watched over the old knight for many years now, and his affections for the man have only grown over time. While protecting and blessing him from afar, Elyssio has had many of his own adventures. On his journeys, he's come to understand just how difficult mortal human life can be and how much easier creatures like himself seem to have it, sequestered away in hidden, eldritch bowers and meadows. In light of this discovery, his ultimate intentions for Sir Godfrey are obtuse and mysterious at best. And yet, he continues to follow him, with the kind of relentlessness only an immortal creature can have.

Biography

Elyssio came into the world quietly, as unicorns often do. His mother and father are but a distant memory to him now, and he could not give you their names if asked, though he remembers well their warmth and care. Such is the way of things among the graceful herds of the Higher Kin: once one is grown, one must leave the herd of one's birth. Some unicorns find a new herd and stay with them, beginning the cycle anew. Others may join for a time, only to take up a more solitary, meandering life. The latter was Elyssio's choice. After a few years of lingering with a herd led by a wise unicorn named Olvera, he eventually departed to forge his own journeys alone. However, he lingered long enough to form a lasting bond with the queenly matriarch, and to this day he still finds his way back to her herd every so often in order to reconnect with her, receiving comfort, admonishments, and advice in equal measure. It was she who instructed him in how to use his innate abilities to shapeshift, building upon the basic knowledge of unicorn magic his parents had sent him on his way with. If placed in danger by any creature, he could assume another form to safely vacate the premises. A bird, perhaps, or a rabbit. Barring that, he could grant himself a burst of speed in his normal form, almost gliding over the turf and out of harm's way. Though many unicorns rarely used such skills, if they'd even learned them, Olvera had honed them into an art form. But she left Elyssio with a singular warning regarding the use of shapeshifting in particular:

Be careful what you become, for you may lose yourself in the process.

In truth, he had been the one to ask for the shapeshifting instruction. And it was all because of something that happened by chance. In his occasional straying during his days with Olvera's herd, he'd forged a sort of friendship with a mortal human he'd almost literally stumbled across while grazing: a young bugler who originally hailed from the northern desert. He had been recruited into the army after settling in Uthaire, and hoped to take in the sights and sounds of a local village festival before he was inevitably sent off into battle. He spoke freely to the creature he thought to be nothing more than a wild horse, expressing his homesickness for the land he'd left behind, as well as the family, friends, and lover who no doubt missed him dearly. Elyssio listened in rapture; such things were far beyond the experiences that unicorns were familiar with. Eventually, when the bugler was finally called to war, Elyssio quietly followed him - with Olvera's reluctant blessing; his mentor dearly hoped that glimpsing the crueler side of humanity would stem the tide of his budding obsession.

The battles Elyssio watched were fierce, and though his instinct to intervene and heal fallen men was strong, he couldn't risk revealing his true form. Not everyone revered unicorns, after all, and even in the midst of battle some might try to claim his horn for their own. His sheltered mind took in all the bloodshed, the violence, and the cruelty of human warfare as it happened. His bugler friend was gravely wounded in the skirmishes, and by the time Elyssio had rushed to his side, it was far too late for even healing magic to save him. Yet Elyssio blessed the dying man with a glimpse of his true form, easing his passing from the world in a small way. As Elyssio fled over the plains back to the safety of Olvera's herd, his opinions towards humanity had dimmed after all the chaos he'd witnessed. And yet despite Olvera's fondest hopes that this would finally make him settle down among his own kind, it wouldn't be too long before Elyssio's curiosity would get the better of him once again.

On a day in spring decades ago, the young unicorn assumed human form. He headed out to the morning market in a village within easy walking distance of the herd's domain, intent on reacquainting himself with the human world after having kept his distance for a while. But while on the forest roads, he happened to catch a glimpse of two men fighting in the distance. When he cautiously approached, he saw that it was a young knight woefully outmatched against a man in heavy armor. The young knight surely would have been killed in the confrontation, had it not been for Elyssio assuming his unicorn form and serving as a distraction. The young knight managed to slay his foe, who turned out to be a member of a rogue knightly brotherhood with bounties on their heads for terrorizing the nearby farms and villages in pursuit of protection payments. After offering a quick prayer of intercession for the fallen knave's soul, the young knight turned to thank his benefactor - only to gasp in awe at the sight of one of the fabled unicorns. He knelt there in reverence, saying that he was unworthy to have been granted such a blessing. Elyssio merely nudged his forehead with his snout, before galloping gracefully off into the brush.

Little did the two know then that their first encounter would bind their fates together for eternity...

Appearance

Facial features:
His large, doelike eyes and long lashes have been enough to render many a villager smitten during his occasional disguised sojourns; his spiralling golden horn is kept carefully concealed while in such human settlements. He possesses a small button nose and full lips, the very picture of softness and delicacy. The way his ears appear varies: around most humans they are regular, rounded ears, but Elyssio would be quite open to showing Godfrey his more unicornlike ones. All in all, the gentle curves of his face and features in general speak to a delightful mingling of the masculine and feminine, lending him a grace few can match.
Hair:
He keeps his auburn locks well-groomed and free of burrs, seeds, and leaves, despite being as apt as any other unicorn to frolic in overgrown woodlands and wilderness regions. He'll also spend hours arranging it in fashionable styles while in human guise.
Body:
Elegant, curvy, and slight, Elyssio's maidenly guise embodies the beauty ideal explored in sculptures and paintings exported abroad by the famed artists of Meridia, a land far to the south of Uthaire. While he sometimes displays unicornish features like cloven hooves, fur tufts, a horn, and a tail, at other times he will endeavor to look completely human.
Fashion:
If he's chosen to adorn his usual maidenly guise with his unicorn features, he tends to garb himself in a faelike fashion with loose, sometimes sheer drapery accented with woven rope belts and touches of forest fauna like acorns, leaves, and vines. That is, if he feels like wearing clothes at all. But when he appears more humanlike, he dresses in more modest robes that suggest minor noble status.
Accessories:He favors elaborate flower crowns, which he makes from fallen blossoms and leaves he gathers. When he can find them, he also likes to adorn himself with shiny golden bangles and hair ornaments. The ones he's collected so far have been lost on the roads and in the forests by various human travelers. Elyssio's abundant woodland animal friends tend to bring such fallen trinkets to him whenever they stumble across them.

Personal Life:

A Fascination with Humanity
Seeking out his knight across the land has led Elyssio to have numerous encounters with humans across the years. Some have been pleasant, while others have been less so. Yet the legacy of his first friendship with a human still remains. In fact, his favored human guise somewhat resembles that long-departed friend; if they stood next to each other, one might believe them to be brothers. It is in this form that he has most frequently mingled among the human denizens of Uthaire, and he has come to be well-acquainted with both the sorrow and happiness that characterizes their lives. Being accepted among the humanfolk is delightful for the young unicorn, and he treasures the intimacy he has been granted with those he's befriended over the years...even if he arguably has earned it under false pretenses. Yet as his beloved knight marches onward across the mortal coil, Elyssio finds himself planning an offer for the chivalrous elder. He has come to believe that the joys of humanity have their limits, and that Godfrey may yet be destined for something...greater.

Mischievous Streak
Like many fae-adjacent beings, Elyssio enjoys playing pranks every now and then. However, his are minor and harmless compared to what other fae folk might perpetrate: rearranged items on shelves, relocated objects, and occasional disappearing acts when conversing with strangers on the road. His least proud moment was when he inadvertently started a tavern fight after noncommittally flirting with several men some years ago. While he'd expected banter and some anger, he wasn't yet familiar enough with human behavior and alcohol to predict that drunken jealousy would rear its head. While the men in question emerged only slightly bruised and made up amongst themselves a short while later (with the aid of some calming unicorn magic), the incident shook Elyssio enough that he resolved to be more careful when doing mischief in the future. Fortunately, he now has a much safer target for foolery in the form of his beloved "Old Stallion."

Miscellania
  • He's a bit of a magpie at heart, and loves collecting shiny human treasures to stow away and admire.
  • Yes, he does flick away annoying flies with that tail of his.
  • While he has drawn the eye of many villagers over time, he hasn't trysted with any of them. Though he has considered it on occasion, the time never seems right.
  • On rare occasions, he assumes an older human guise which better reflects what he might look like in human years, give or take a few decades. He's a lot more spry than the average centenarian, though.
  • It's honestly hard for him to decide whether he prefers his humanlike forms or his "true" unicorn appearance now. He wonders if this is part of the danger that Olvera warned him about.
  • It still baffles him how mortals take the gift of life for granted...as well as how they can cope with the grim finality of death. This just may be one of his limitations as an immortal being.
  • Like all unicorns, he refers to equines and cervines as "Lesser Kin," and loves them all dearly. He hates to see any of them mistreated.
  • While his magic assists him somewhat, he heavily relies on communication with animals in order to keep track of Godfrey's whereabouts on his knightly travels.
