Aymes Crombie is a man on a mission: namely, to eliminate that which he considers an unholy blemish on the otherwise pure lands of the Consummatis Colony. The blemish in question? Nothing more and nothing less than witchcraft. Yet sorcery is not a common topic of concern in the separatist lands, save for among a chosen few. Allied with a mysterious council of prominent citizens who share such a worry, Crombie aims to show the common Consummatisens they've been sorely mistaken in ignoring the lurking threat in their midst. The trials and travails he's faced during his righteous crusade have only solidified his resolve to continue his hunting. He sees himself as a tireless warrior of justice, and believes the common folk should be grateful for his ceaseless protection.

And yet in truth, most are terrified of the infamous "Hounder of Witches," even those without a drop of sorcery in their veins. For not everyone who has faced the end of their life at Crombie's hands has deserved it...if any of them ever did.

Biography

Crombie's birth and upbringing were humbler than might be expected, considering the airs he puts on. While his family was mildly prosperous, their trade was in tailoring; it was far from the most glamorous profession, nor was it the most profitable in the community. Crombie always felt himself destined for greater things, for influence and power in the township at large. He expressed admiration for the local government and the clergy, and at one time or another considered perhaps going into one of those professions. His parents, however, insisted that he join his siblings in learning their ancestral profession. Begrudgingly, he submitted to their tutelage. But his mind was forever pondering ways to escape the droll fate he'd been born into as he toiled away, endlessly mending clothes and taking in seams.

Yet salvation would soon dawn for the callow youth.

Into the lives of the Clemency Bridge residents came a healer. The man was of arcane sensibilities, which by rights should have rendered him an outcast in a village full of devout separatists. Yet somehow, his charisma won out, as did the appeal of the strong remedies he offered the villagers for their many ailments. But his services came with a price: everyone who purchased his wares soon found themselves pressed into the strange, pagan cult the healer was forming around himself. The Clemency Bridge clergy, quite out of their depth, fled the township to seek aid elsewhere - leaving their congregation fully at the mercy of the healer. All the families of the village soon fell under his spell, willingly participating in the rituals he held and creeping closer to the sacrificial oblivion he'd planned for them since his arrival.

But he hadn't counted on his own untimely doom creeping up behind him.

How he did so is a mystery, but Aymes Crombie was the one to slay the corrupting healer. Not that anyone in Clemency Bridge ever found that out, which suited him just fine. They simply woke up one day, freed from their enchantments and none the worse for wear. The clergy returned, religious services resumed, and all were settled back in to the usual rhythm of village life. All save for Crombie, who'd finally gotten a taste of the profession he wanted to take up: witch hunting. Killing his first witch had been intoxicating, and he craved the chance to off another one. The moment he could do so, he applied for apprenticeship with a roving band of witch hunters. Leaving the village of his birth and that hateful tailoring work in the dust behind him, he swore that he would be hailed as a great man upon his return.

As the years passed, Crombie grew in deadly competence. Whether arguing convincingly for the execution of witches on trial or simply shooting them through their sorcerous hearts, he became adept at finding creative methods to kill his hated quarry. His tenacity only increased as well; it isn't for nothing that he earned the moniker "Hounder of Witches." By the time he graduated from his apprenticeship, he had already far surpassed the skills of his erstwhile teachers. By now, their names have faded with time, yet his own star has continued to rise.

Even so, many would call it an evil star indeed. Crombie's name upon the wind brings with it fear and uncertainty, and the common folk aren't quite sure whether they should welcome him as a hero or decry him as a villain.

The Hounder of Witches, however, cares nothing for the thoughts of the little people. For as long as there are witches in these godsforsaken lands, his hunt will never cease.

Appearance

Facial features:

Hair:
Crombie makes sure to visit the barber regularly in order to keep his gray-streaked locks looking their best. Barring that, he normally has a servant maintain his hair for him whenever possible.
Body:
His body has a certain hardness to it from the road, and he's gained some muscle through solid horsemanship and travels on foot. Still, he's also quite curvy in some areas. To mention such a thing to his face would be to invite peril, however. Crombie is not a man to accept any vulgar comments on his body, positive or otherwise.
Fashion:
Crombie's fashion plate tends towards the sober, as is common in the world of separatist clothing. Nevertheless, his doublets, breeches, and other staples are made of more luxurious material than the usual homespun fabrics of the region. Such is the reward Crombie has claimed for himself from the supporters of his witch hunts.
Accessories:
He is never without his trusty weapons: a pistol with special blessed silver bullets, and a sanctified dagger. Both of these have served him well in his singleminded war against witches. As for fashion accessories, he's often seen with a fine hat and cloak. His buttons and buckles are made of solid gold, never brass or any other metal alloy.

Personal Life:

An Old Injury
Crombie's left eye is a sore spot for him. Whenever he's asked about it, he tends to deflect and change the subject. If pushed further, he becomes downright wrathful. It's best not to inquire about the stitched-up wound, if one values one's health and safety.

Familial Estrangement and Crombie Manor
None of his family seem interested in maintaining ties with him, which suits Crombie just fine. A solitary man for the most part, he maintains a decent-sized household which he returns to intermittantly in order to rest and recover between journeys. There he enjoys the company of little more than cordially-distant servants and the occasional invited visitor, aside from when one of the council members decides to stop by.

Miscellania
  • Despite putting on a facade of physical purity for the more pious of his wealthy sponsors, Crombie isn't averse to slaking his intimate thirsts whenever he can. He views it as what he's owed for defending the land from the scourge of witchery.
  • On occasion, he visits a certain small village in order to seek respite from the world. Far off on the outskirts of that humble township, there sits a farm boasting a fertile apple orchard...it's one of his favorite places to visit, and not because of its pastoral beauty.
  • He is a teetotaler, detesting both the sight and smell of alcohol. He despises smoking, as well.
  • While he was instructed in the family trade of tailoring, he considers mending clothes and other such tasks to be beneath him. His sewing skills go unused unless it's an extreme emergency.
  • One of the council members, a socialite and widow, seems inordinately fond of Crombie. He, however, does not return said fondness. Remaining cordial and distant in her presence, he hopes she'll get the hint. She never does.
  • At home in his study, he keeps a large collection of trophies from all the witches he's put to death. Whenever he has visitors, he offers to give them a tour of said collection. Most know better than to refuse his invitation.
  • When it comes to propositioning others, Crombie doesn't seem to care about their gender. Nevertheless, he tends to favor those smaller, weaker, and more effeminate than himself.
  • They say that in spite of the religious fervor with which Crombie pursues witches, he doesn't seem to be a man of faith. During the few Assemblies he's been witnessed attending most recently, he's been situated in the back of the sanctuary, staring on at the proceedings in a judgmental silence.
  • In contrast to many folk in the Consummatis Colony, Crombie does not observe the Vow of Plainspeeche, at least not consistently. Ergo, he tends to speak with a more "modern," though sophisticated, dialect.
